What are these festivities:

Romerías

  • What is it about? Popular processions in honor of a patron saint or virgin. Devotees carry sacred images from local churches to hermitages or holy sites.
  • Characteristics: Beautifully decorated floats by local groups who offer food and drink to attendees. Participants wear traditional costumes, adding to the colorful spectacle. The processions also feature animals and livestock. Romerías are vibrant events filled with folk music and traditional dances, creating a festive and authentic atmosphere.

Baile de Magos

  • What is it about? These are festive evenings where people gather to dance to the rhythm of folk groups and orchestras. They usually precede the romerías.
  • Characteristics: Live folk music, traditional dances and local gastronomy, such as papas arrugadas, gofio and Canarian wine. To participate it is usually necessary to book in advance and it is compulsory to wear the typical costume, called the "traje de Mago".

San Juan Festivities

  • What is it about? The San Juan Festivities are night-time celebrations held on June 23, marking the eve of the summer solstice.
  • Characteristics: These festivities include the burning of bonfires on beaches and squares, symbolising purification and rebirth. A popular tradition is the midnight swim in the sea, representing cleansing and renewal. In addition to the bonfires, the festivities are filled with live music, traditional dances and fireworks displays.

Corpus Christi

  • What is it about? Religious celebration honoring the Eucharist and the sacrifice of Jesus.
  • Characteristics: In La Laguna and La Orotava, flower and sand carpets adorn the streets, creating ephemeral works of art. The Corpus Christi procession walks over these carpets, concluding the festival with a solemn and pious act.
