How to choose the best boat tour in Tenerife?
With so many options, it’s normal to hesitate
In Tenerife there are many boat trips to see whales and dolphins…
But not all of them do it properly.
Which one is really good?
Which one truly respects the animals?
Which one follows the law?
After years working at sea, we have learned something important: it’s not only about the price or the size of the boat. It’s about values.
That’s why we have selected only a few. We only collaborate with crews who share our commitment to respect, safety and real quality.
Instead of overwhelming you with dozens of options, here you will find only tours that are truly worth it.
In private or in group?
A private tour offers exclusivity and full flexibility. It is ideal if you are looking for a more intimate or personalized experience.
A group tour can be perfect if you prefer a more accessible option or enjoy sharing the experience with others.
RIB boat, sailboat or catamaran?
The RIB boat offers greater agility to locate different groups of cetaceans and enjoy a more dynamic and informative experience.
The sailboat provides a calmer and more exclusive navigation. Perfect if you are looking for connection and peace.
The catamaran offers stability and space, ideal for families or for those who prioritize comfort.
Each boat has its own style. We help you choose the one that suits you best.
Would you like to feel the calm of sailing on a sailboat?
Do you prefer the stability of catamaran?
Or the excitement of a RIB boat expedition? ?
The size of the boat does not define the quality. What truly matters is how the company operates and its respect for the cetaceans.
Whatever you choose, our captains and guides will accompany you to ensure a safe, authentic and respectful experience.
What does “legal tour” really mean?
Whale and dolphin watching is regulated by law.
A legal tour means the company is officially authorized, respects the required distances, limits the observation time and follows strict rules to avoid disturbing the animals’ natural behavior.
Not all boats follow these rules.
Your choice matters.
When you book with a responsible company, you directly contribute to the protection of Tenerife’s marine environment.
There isn't one perfect tour for everyone. The best choice depends on how you want to experience it, who you're travelling with and what matters most to you.
-
Get as close as possible to the ocean in a small group.
-
Enjoy a peaceful and relaxing sailing experience.

Not sure which experience is right for you?
We were once travellers discovering Tenerife for the first time too. That’s why we understand that, with so many options available, it’s not always easy to know which experiences are truly worth your time.
Tell us a little about your trip and we'll recommend the experience that suits you best.
The cetaceans of Tenerife
The southwest coast of Tenerife is one of the best places in Europe to see whales and dolphins in the wild all year round. That is why it is essential to book a whale watching tour with authorized companies that respect the official regulations.
A marine sanctuary: The south west coast of Tenerife is home to a variety of cetacean species, both resident and migratory, that find refuge in these waters throughout the year.
Great biodiversity: The Teno-Rasca Marine Strip, situated in the southwest of Tenerife between Punta de Rasca and Punta de Teno, is renowned for its rich cetacean diversity in Europe. This region is home to the largest resident population of tropical pilot whales in Europe, along with various species of sea turtles and a diverse range of other marine creatures, including fin whales, various dolphin species, sperm whales, and more.
Global importance: In 2011, this area became the third worldwide and the first in Europe to be designated as a Special Area of Conservation, known for its unique features of marine life. It is also part of the Natura 2000 Network, which seeks to preserve habitats and species threatened in Europe.
International recognitions: The Teno-Rasca Area has been recognized as a 'Hope Spot' by Mission Blue and as a 'Whale Heritage Site' by the World Cetacean Alliance, highlighting its global significance.
Regulated activities: All leisure activities and professionals in this area are strictly regulated. The sighting of whales should be done in a sustainable way, respecting standards of speed, distance, duration of the sightings, and other measures to prevent any interference in the natural behavior of the animals. Abiding by these rules is essential to preserve the peace and well-being of cetaceans, ensuring an experience navy that is responsible and respectful.
Your choice matters: When you choose a company authorized and committed to the protection of the fauna, contribute to guarantee the respect of the rules of conservation in the Area of Teno-Rasca.
A sustainable future: The conservation of this protected area promotes the growth and the preservation of populations of whales, ensuring a healthy marine environment and promote harmony between human beings and marine life.

When is the best time to see whales and dolphins in Tenerife?
Whales and dolphins can be seen all year round.
Tenerife has a resident population of short-finned pilot whales and bottlenose dolphins, which makes sightings possible in any season. Sea conditions may vary depending on the month, but there is no “bad time” for this experience.
Is it better to take a boat tour in the morning or in the afternoon?
The truth is that there is no exact answer.
Traditionally, the morning is recommended because of the sea conditions.
But with our experience, we can say that we see animals both in the morning and in the afternoon. In fact, sometimes we have had more surprising encounters in the afternoon departure.
Nothing in the ocean is 100% predictable.
It depends on the day, the conditions and... luck.
Where do whale and dolphin watching boat tours depart from in Tenerife?
Boat tours in Tenerife to see whales and dolphins mainly depart from three ports in the south of the island:
Puerto Colón (Costa Adeje)
This is the port with the largest number of excursions and the most well-known for cetacean watching.
Los Cristianos
Very convenient if you are staying in this area. It offers several authorized boat options.
Los Gigantes
Ideal if you want to combine whale watching with spectacular views of the cliffs.
Is whale and dolphin watching guaranteed?
Cetaceans live in the wild, so no serious operator can offer a 100% guarantee.
However, the southwest coast of Tenerife has a resident population of short-finned pilot whales and bottlenose dolphins all year round, which makes the probability of sightings very high in any season.
Our captains know the area very well and always operate in full respect of the regulations, without chasing or disturbing the animals.
Why is there such a price difference between boat tours in Tenerife?
The price of a boat tour in Tenerife depends on several factors:
- Type and size of the boat
- Maximum number of passengers
- Duration of the tour
- Services included (food, drinks, transport)
- More exclusive or more accessible experience
A larger boat does not mean lower quality, and a smaller boat does not automatically guarantee a better experience. What truly matters is that the company is authorized and respects whale watching regulations.
We select boats for their real commitment to the ocean, not just for their price.
Is it safe to take a boat tour in Tenerife?
Yes. All authorized tours must comply with strict maritime safety regulations.
Boats are inspected, have mandatory insurance, and the captain must hold a professional license. In additio
In addition, the southwest area of Tenerife usually offers stable sea conditions for much of the year, which makes the navigation generally calm.
Can I get seasick during the tour?
It depends on each person’s sensitivity and on the sea conditions that day.
Catamarans usually offer greater stability.
Speedboats are more dynamic, and we do not usually feel seasick.
Sailboats provide a smoother navigation, but the movement can sometimes cause more discomfort.
If you are prone to seasickness, we recommend avoiding heavy meals, not drinking too much before the tour, and informing the crew as soon as possible if you need help. There are also tablets available at the pharmacy that can help.
Is it a suitable activity for children?
Yes, many boat tours in Tenerife are suitable for families.
Some boats are especially comfortable for children due to their stability and space. We always recommend choosing the option that best fits the children’s age and the duration they can enjoy.
